When Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey and Jim McKelvey founded Square, they gave merchants an easy (some might say revolutionary) way to accept credit cards while circumventing the pesky processing fees that can take a toll on a small business. Merchants pay Square a flat rate on every credit card "swipe" and, in return, Square pays the credit card transaction fees to the bank or credit card network. However, the credit card processing business is a pricey one--Square has struggled to stay out of the red since its inception. The company went public in 2015, and is continuing to beef up its portfolio of money management services, which include a payroll software business and a cash-advance service called Square Capital.
